Martin Luther King Jr was born 15th January 1929 in Atlanta, Georgia, USA.\n

He liked to play football, baseball and piano. Both his parents were church ministers and so he grew up in a relatively middle class family - despite the Great Depression. He was born Michael King Jr but after his family went on a trip to Germany his father was inspired by the Protestant leader and changed both his and his son\u2019s names to Martin Luther King in his honour.\n

Martin was very clever and went to college when he was only 15 on a special programme for gifted children. He got a BA in Sociology and registered for Theological Seminary in Pennsylvania. During his studies, life for black people in America was tough. He graduated with a Bachelor of Divinity degree.\n

King married Coretta Scott in 1953. They subsequently had four children.\n

\n

During his studies, King was impressed by the achievements of Mohandas Gandhi with his ideas of non-violent protest. King decided to become a church minister. In 1954, at the age of twenty five, King took the post of pastor in Montgomery, Alabama. His return to the South from University life in Boston was not easy but he believed that he was needed there. He received a Doctorate of Philosophy in 1955.\n
