Jenner's greatest legacy to humanity was vaccination against smallpox - even today there is no cure. \n

\n

In 1967, there were still some 10-15 million cases worldwide. The World Health Organisation launched an eradication programme using Jenner's vaccination methods. By 1971, smallpox was eradicated from South America and by 1975 it was eradicated from India. The last ever natural case occurred in Somalia in 1977 where it was caught by a hospital worker, Ali Maow Maalim, who survived the attack. \n

\n

In 1980, following intensive checks, the WHO finally pronounced smallpox eradicated from the world. Jenner's work, which led directly to the eradication of smallpox in the world, has saved millions of human lives.\n
